Although I'm an agnostic, I went to private Christian schools from elementary to high school, and my family is Buddhist. So I know a lot about both religions, and that made this manga more hilarious for me.

If you're open minded, not sensitive to both religions, this manga would come harmless and amusing to you.

I adore Arakawa Under the Bridge, so I keep trying to read this and I can never get in to it. It is mildly amusing at times, but the fact that the two are supposed to be Buddha and Jesus is mostly happenstance and has little influence on what they do or the jokes which are told. There is a gold mine of jokes waiting for be made there and it just seems like a missed opportunity.

if you want to use jesus and comes with...some responsibillities

this is not jesus and buddha
this have nothing to do with religion
it is about 2 nerds living their weird life filled with wants and needs in tokyo and they just happen to have magical abbilities they dont use very often

if jesus and buddha had these sort of tendencies they would not have been remembered today

it is funny
but it tries and obviously to some degree win easy points with using jesus and buddhas name
i would have liked it better if the MCs would have been named
joe and bob

I am an happily reader of the french translation by KUROKAWA Edition, and since I have only good to say about Saint Young Men, I will only claim this: I want an original movie adaptation with Johnny Depp and Keanu Reeves as Jesus and Buddha. Oh boy I cannot even imagine it.

this series is so funny and weird and for someone who was raised religously such as me, this series is really something! i was laughing out loud here, i mean im not buddhist but from what little i know from my history lessons, Buddha is pretty damn awesome! hahaha. and Jesus for some reason is sorta a happy-go-lucky type but thats fine as well cause he makes it all the more funnier. i just hope that the translators will update this soon. this series is for those who just want to relax and sitback and not go into arguments about everything.

A breath of fresh air

If you are worried about religion, rest assured. Far from being sacrilegious and blasphemous, Saint Oniisan is a delightful, award-winning take on two of the world's most revered religious figures.

Nakamura Hikaru is masterful in his comedy, ensuring that punchlines entertain while being respectful to religion. Follower and non-follower alike will be entertained by the witty references to Christian and Buddhist beliefs. And there is no offence intended - only jokes and puns.

Indeed, this manga will not erode the readers' views of Jesus and Buddha, who are the two main characters of this manga. It will in fact enrich them with the best (or often trivial) of human qualities, making both more personal without the heavy philosophy (It has for me, a Catholic Christian).

The best way to read this is with an open mind. It is a breath of fresh air... at least, for Jesus and Buddha.

A must-read for the manga reader.

Bit of a bore

While I knew this was a comedy, I was hoping for it to have something of a philosophical outlook, but it's really just a gag series. I suppose I shouldn't hold that agains it, but it feels like a missed chance.

A little more annoying is that Jesus is mostly an outlet for "a Westerner in Japan" jokes. The author doesn't seem to know anything about him other than some of the miracle stories. How can you tell good jokes about something you know next to nothing about?

you have to try it. This idea is so great someone should have thought of it before. This should be a t.v show. This would be the greatest sitcom ever.

This manga is just interesting, and the humour comes so naturally.

Epic. Hilarious. Clever. Witty. Well-thought. Well-researched.

I could just sit there and rattle off the adjectives I could use to describe this manga, but why don't I give a semi-in depth review?

The art is very fitting for this series. It's kind of a psuedo-realistic style that you see a lot of in seinen mangas like this. It's really suitable, I don't see it being any other way. I love the opening colour pages in the book, they are very nice and always a treat.

Saint Young Men is actually pretty good. It's about Jesus and Buddha sharing an apartment in Tokyo. Some people might immediately think this is a recipe for a sacrilegious, offensive comedy, but Nakamura Hikaru really did his homework. The subtle references to Christian symbolism are interesting and well-thought-out.

I have the first three volumes. When the forth hits bookshelves this September, you can bet I'm going to get it. smile

Pure genius. Also, incidentally, pure crack. Lol Jesus and Buddha at the amusement park; Buddha's uncontrollable radiance only put out by thoughts of underwear; Jesus getting mistaken for a yakuza ex-con; Buddha's ears being used as bus-handles lol; the two of them totally failing at comedy skits but desperately trying anyhow.

So much gold in this manga. It's practically a gold-mine. OF LAUGHS. laugh

Agree with Mierten that Mohammed as a third roommate or potential roommate would be EPIC. What a great idea! I also like how this manga in a totally light-hearted way actually encourages religious cooperation. Like the way Buddha and Jesus are best buds and make all these really sweet compromises for each other. (Well, they both are so compassionate... How could they not get along, right?) Lol.
