Mixed Feelings
by Suxinn

Rating: N/A
I feel like this manga started out really strong, and there was a period of time when it felt like every chapter hit the right points, but then a certain event happened that made me lowkey put it on the backburner (and I'm not referring to the ending)...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Namely, I think the author REALLY mishandled Touma being outed. Like, the reactions of those around him were realistic, but the way the author framed it as if it was understandable to be a homophobe, and that the guy had the *right* to be disgusted. I was legitimately pissed off, just like the girls in the manga.

And it was also around this time I read the vastly superior Kanojo ni Naritai Kimi to Boku which also had moments like this, but whenever it happened, the author actually treated it with the gravity it deserved, and while it acknowledged that people are going to be ignorant, it never let off those people for the hurt that they caused, even if it was unintentional hurt. ...Unlike what I felt was happening in Blue Flag at the time. (And I still never felt as if the author adequately addressed it here.)

However, after hearing about what happened with the ending, I came back to it, and... Hm, I still don't know how to feel about it. I don't agree that it shouldn't have happened this way (I'm glad it did), but I also wish there had been more buildup. I feel like the author had an ending she wanted to reach, but she didn't know how to reach it, which is why it felt so clumsy.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Also not a fan of what Masumi's husband said about how he didn't feel secure when she's around either women or men (because she's bisexual I suppose? another nitpick: author never uses the word "bisexual"!! ugh). And that he doesn't feel like he "belongs" entirely now that he's dating her, which made me go ??? why is her bisexuality all about you?? But, again, I think this might be more of the fault of the author's framing than anything. Man, this manga... so many little missteps that just add up...

I guess this is just one of those series that I'm just going to feel ambivalent about.

what a shitshow and forced development, even an open ending or going their seperate way ending might be better than this shitshow

I liked it a lot. Its a manga about bisexuality for me, and a very good one to top it. Maybe the best queer manga of the year.

*Spoiler Alert"

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I'm from a country that doesn't favor gay like western country (they favor everything), so normally majority of the population oppose to it too. The reason is simple, and would be agreed by majority people of the world, to avoid problem in the society. Just being normal is safe. So, if this manga genre is yaoi, I will totally avoid this. But because i'm the guy who never read synopsis, just read manga based on the art design. So I accidentally for the first time in my life, read a sort of "lgbt" manga. However, I like the story though. Its good. Its kind of story that happen to lgbt people, how society treat them, how people around them treat them. Its sad actually. But I really hate it when people blame God, but that's not the case in this manga (japanese society is kind of godless you know). But the ending though, its kind of forced. I read comment everywhere about the ending, pro-lgbt will like it, anti-lgbt will hate it. But author state at the ending some good phrase you know, he said anything you choose will ended up hurting some people, but as long as you happy, its okay. We are not perfect. So, I really dislike the ending because Ichinose suddenly become gay. Totally rushed ending. You cant make everyone happy, right?

*Update after some thinking*

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I dunno why this manga kind of capture my mind a bit, maybe because it is different from any manga I ever read. I think the ending is kind of open-ending. The author never tell whether Ichinose turned gay. It can be that they are just 2 buddies who love together and not practicing any gay stuff. Yeah, the last panel shows Ichinose is happy while holding hand, before gay exist in this modern world (its exist a long time ago but in secretive way not like gay parade today). No one will expect you to be gay if you holding your friend's hand. So, that's my point. They are best friend forever, buddies, childhood friend, one is gay but what if Ichinose just being sympathize with Touma & just increase the best friend power level. Right?

So some people who would have vote 10 donwgrade the note to 1 just because they didn't like the last 2 chapters ?
The note should note be emotional but reflect your impression about the entire serie. And I'm sorry whatever you think about the end, the rest of it is amazingly great and nowhere else in a scool life manga have I read young people feelings so well written.
I'm not a guy who usually put 10 but face to such absurd notation, here we go

I genuinely think this manga is amazing.

Hands down one of the best things I’ve read in a while in any format. Granted, I’ve read a good deal of yaoi but not as much shonen/shojo manga in the past few years so I might be biased. Regardless, I found this story to be really unique and refreshing.

I absolutely loved the way the author tackled the topics of gender roles and expectations through characters like Mami and Toumo, as well as friendship/romantic love through Futabe. I loved that the author didn’t shy away from LGBT themes, and I appreciated the alternative perspective that the audience was granted through Kensuke's characterization. I actually think that the author displayed a lot of grace and consideration when exploring Kensuke's feelings.

On that note, this might be silly but, reading through the comment sections of the sites that I read this on, I was a bit (naively) surprised to see blatantly homophobic comments on a lot of the chapters. I know what a manga might not be enough to change people’s minds on things like this, but I’m grateful that works like this do exist if only to increase exposure and allow people to reflect on their feelings even more. As the manga explored – we all have to choose the path that we think is best for us.

I guess my only gripe is the last two chapters. I agree that they felt a little bit rushed, and I would have appreciated experiencing more of the development between Taichi and Toumo’s romantic relationship. Regardless, I don’t think this detracted from the experience, it just gave me a bit of FOMO.

Overall, I feel like this is fun, interesting, engaging work that dives deep into important themes. It sucked me right in and held me tight the whole way through. This was a work that really captivated me and will hold a special place in my memories. Highly recommended!

If you're looking for a really good manga to read, this has everything for you: great and consistent arts; thoughtful, forward and progressive characters (all of them); a story of friendship and love; a story of self-discovery, -acceptance and -understanding.

The most impressive of all in this manga for me is the communication and thoughtfulness of the characters. I'm a grown adult yet I'm always surprised to see how the characters' thoughts and feelings are all communicated so clearly. Of course, there will be times where they hesitate, they bottleneck, or they refuse to see something new. They all come to accept and understand that: It is OKAY to take time, to be at your own pace, come to your own terms, make your decisions, reflect and continue to go on, go forth, to whichever path and direction no matter the conflicts, confusions or considerations one might have.

Life is a long journey for you, yourself to continuously learn about yourself: to adapt maybe for the better, or to change to how you see fit.

It's great the dialogue too. I still get goosebumps remembering Touma's friends arguing over their stances for him while Ichinose just sits there listening; or how Futaba and Touma have a heart-to-heart conversation about how they feel about the other, about Ichinose, and how they might choose to move forward with themselves and others; or how Masumi describing feelings and words and how we can choose to be non-conformed and it's okay...

I repeat: I'm an adult and I still learn so much from these high school characters!

And with that, the story concludes.

If you're looking for a more traditional, more well-defined/accepted romantic story. This is not it. It's about "self". No matter how vague or ambiguous it or one might be - and we might never know what happen to Ichinose, Touma and Futaba in those two years and five years after high school - be kind and be happy for the decisions they make and will continue to make in the future.

What a terrible end to a pretty good manga

Frankly, the ending absolutely ruins the manga. It's like the author tried to appease some people, but it makes absolutely no sense. I am disappointed. A 1 might seem harsh, but that's how much the ending sucks.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Taichi and Futaba randomly break up in the end. Touma and Taichi randomly end up together. Futaba marries someone else.

What an absolute shitshow.
