I don't really do horror, but...

So horror is listed as a proceed with caution or just avoid it section for me. I don't seek out the horror genre because I don't like it. That said, I did find Parasyte an interesting read. It was probably the first horror manga I ever read.

I would recommend it to someone who didn't mind horror elements.

Good Old Manga

I just finished it today. I finished it for within 5 hours. The story drew me, while the art doesn't. Nevertheless, I totally OK with the art, as I grew up with this kind of art style. I like how the mangaka divided the panels, simple and easy to read, thus it's easy to understand the story (not like today's manga with crazy panels and bling bling eyes + super huge nasty b00bs + never ending plots). The spin-off of this series, Neo Parasyte F, though has more modern art, it can't grew on me.

I'm not complaining about this great manga, but I feel there's so much great potential gone wasted because of the pacing suddenly feel rushed. Maybe 10 volumes not enough for such great manga. And it might because of the translator, so many the dialogues are confusing. Let's take a look at the simple one: Shinji and Shinichi. I must admit, the story is pretty predictable. I kinda know what Migi would do, and what will the ending be, yet it still great to read. This manga has a roller coaster of emotions, which makes this manga greater.

I always see and feel Migi has more emotion than other parasites. Maybe it's because Migi is also the main character, so if you put Migi in an empty emotion, it's not good to read. I like to see how Shinichi and Migi interacted. I also like Tamiya Kazuko, especially at the end. She's changing but her face still a poker face. What I wish to learn more is the whereabouts of these parasites. And I do believe in Tamiya Kazuko's theory at the end.

Classic and original sci-fi manga.

First of all, I took my time thinking and reading
all previous comments about the whole thing after whole day binge finishing this.

To be fair, I picked this up in my Kodansha hunting for old aesthetic to study about, as for this, it won 1993 general Kodansha so I thought it was 1990s manga (I'll explain later). Sci-fi, action specifically shounen or lovey-dovey roundabout romance of shoujo aren't my cup of tea. But upon reading this, expecting the contents to be as bad as the cover (still classic horror 1990s poster lmao), it naturally took my most attention and joy reading it. A few things to elaborate:

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Plot wise, it's really tight in most areas I couldn't think of plot holes except for some which I, too, will elaborate later here. Unique storytelling, sorta reminded me of E.T (1982). I freaking love bits of laugh I got from this series thanks to interesting characters. Loose ends: the baby, the military operations because it felt like too stereotypically messy unlike the whole story.

Character wise, let's just say everyone played well. I love bromance btwn Shinji and Migi which was why I stayed in first place. A few who drove me nuts up to the end: Satomi the most because of her being too sensitive and nosey despite all humanity parts on her, slightly irrelevant but her hairstyle and her overall mom like personality, got me mistaking her for a mom as some commenters have pointed out previously, the nosey detective who didn't listen and messed up so bad.

In the other hand, who got my most interest aka my fav characters whom other commenters also said same thing: Tamura, she was the femme fatale who gave noir vibes of this story, every single of her scene never failed to intrigue me, too bad she uselessly died. Migi and Shinji themselves, Shinji reminded me of Jung from Cheese in the Trap (manhwa) with him slowly turning into a nice psychopath. The realism in this whole character development was outstanding, he was different to most shounen characters I've observed. To the point I fell love with him, sob sob. Kana, her sharp sense, humor, a bad girl, and carefree she was, indeed lotsa better compared to doubtful Satomi who would have slowed Shinji. She could be useful but too bad Kana didn't listen to Shinji's advice at all, she got it coming. But still, she should've survived it. Mori Udo and Parasa, they were second the most who got me good laughs as they were cute. As for the bad parasite, I think it was that expressionful guy who was after Shinji as he was that typical villain but he possessed somewhat 1980s-1990s villain characteristics. And lastly but not the least, the baby. I kept wondering whether the baby turned out. If only Shinji took him under his wing because Tamura gave him to Shinji after all, it would have made a whole thing more interesting. This baby is the loose end I wanted to know the most. The village girl second, idk whether she died.

Aesthetic wise, it felt like 1980s drawing from their face and good fashion but 1990s feel too, so I did my research here. Apparently it was released in 1988 until 1996, so it explained why. The cover, they could have done better. Crystal clear drawing, realism. Panels easy to follow. Solid.

In short, it hit all the marks. Worthy to be one of best sci-fi mangas, specifically best 1980s-90s to highlight for. Great opening (like that dog's wonder on the parasite), it got loosened midway thru the story because of the deaths of favourite characters, and the ending was cool and all philosophical but I honestly didn't care about Satomi much so meh.

I don't understand why this series is so highly praised when the worst girl got the spotlight.
Satomi is shit. Kana should have made it through. If you can't do romance right, then kill them both off, ugh.

Not to mention, after Kana died, the whole plot turned shit. I honestly think this author is more suited to romance, cause without an interesting heroine, you see right through his horrible plot lines.

EDIT: needs to find a better community, no one fixes the horrible thumbnails. I fixed it, lazy bums.

The art on the cover looks pretty bad, right? But the manga is really much better than that--even the art part is better than the cover.

Also, this manga was good enough to get its own loyal anime adaptation called "Parasyte." Check this out--you probably won't regret it.

Finished this series after 6+ hours of all-nighter reading; gotta say it was worth it.

Above everything else, this is a history about where humans stand on this world; about sustainability, animal rights, ecosystems... and the "parasytes" are only there to justify the discussion. By the end of the day, isn't all fiction about the people from the time of it's creation? About the world the author has lived in? A piece of the Zeitgeist, using a certain media format and the artist's point of view...

Kiseiju is relevant, even if it suffers a bit from the "shounen formula" syndrome.

This manga was so much fun to read, the story isn't very dark and it has a much happier ending than I expected. It's not excessively graphic, but it is a really good manga and I recommend it to anyone who has time to read 64 chapters. The subject of the manga is basically about human naivety and how people view themselves as greater than other creatures yet claim to care about their environment. People really live their life selfishly, they take care of animals because they are afraid of loss, they want to protect the environment so that they can continue to abuse it. The manga proves this point to me, but it also shows the good side of humanity, the side that can love and enjoy life.
I saw that there's an anime airing right now based on this manga, which is awesome considering how old the manga is (88-95), and I'm surprised it never became an anime until now, the anime is pretty good too so far.

The story instantly drew me into the manga and has kept me throughout. The art on the other hand is veeeery dated and that is what brought the score down slightly (but it's not bad enough to really detract from the story). The story mainly focuses on the main character and any other character is just fodder and even the main protagonist himself isn't too interesting. There isn't a lot of personality presented for any of the cast. That being said, at one point the story gave me feels. All in all, great story, poor cast.

A Good Read

Kiseiju can entertain.
The art is decent (bear in mind its a 90's manga); not the worst there is, but not the best either. However, the art is just right enough to get the story across and it's flaws are not too distracting. The action scene are done well and it's true that the art is "sensitive"; that's how this manga's gore can be described- sensitive. Beware of small feet and hands.
The plot is interesting as it revolves around, for the most part, survival. It emphasizes a conflicting struggle to survive between humans and aliens. There's also the environment theme which was touched upon at the very start but was not really explored further until the manga's conclusion, which would be one downside. The manga can also be funny at times (Muahahahahaha) and the romance was a little weird. It was more of a clinging relationship, than a high school love affair. The manga has it's touching moments and one in particular managed to make me sniffle a little.
Migi is a lovely character and so is Tamura Reiko (this character's development added depth to the series). The MC had many annoying moments, but he's generally tolerable. At first he changed overnight becoming a badass and then he grew in the sense that he became aware of his limits and that it was not his sole responsibility to protect humanity and that the humans around him should be given a chance to fight for their survival as well. In otherwords, he had development, much like Migi and Tamura Reiko.
The ending felt rushed, and when I say ending, I mostly mean the concluding ideas. As a reader I didn't feel eased into it and it came off as the author just simply trying to tie up lose ends , especially with the environment theme, which could have done with more exploration. All in all, a good read.
